First off, we think it’s important to make clear that “hair of the dog” hangover cures will not actually cure any hangovers. In fact, continuing to consume the alcohol the next morning will only compound the severity of your hangover symptoms. However, continuing to drink will cause you to stay inebriated, and depending on how much alcohol you’ve consumed, it can delay the onset of a hangover.

Now that that’s been made clear, if you still decide to go with a hair of the dog cure, we have some suggestions for you! In our opinion, these are some of the best morning after cocktails that actually make compounding your hangover symptoms worth it.

Fancy Irish Coffee

Technically, an irish coffee can just be black coffee with a bit of whiskey in it, but that’s certainly not the best version of an irish coffee. Our preferred morning after irish coffee includes: black coffee, whiskey and Averna Amaro instead of cream. The combination is a bit easier on your stomach than the traditional irish coffee and also includes enough caffeine to give you the pep you’ll need to make it through the day.

Michelada

A Michelada is essentially the mexican version of a bloody mary. The drink contains clamato, lime juice, worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, chili powder and a mexican lager. Think a bloody mary but with beer instead of vodka. The lime and fiery kick of hot sauce are sure to jumpstart your morning.

Electric Current Fizz

This hair-of-the-dog cocktail includes everything you need to get your day on track after a night of drinking. To make this drink you’ll need an egg, lemon juice, powdered sugar, gin and seltzer. This is a common bartender-approved hangover cure that even appeared in the New York Times!

Fernet And Coke

Fernet is hangover booze that has been used as a hair-of-the-dog remedy for decades. Favoured mostly by Buenos Aires, this amaro is made with a blend of herbs, spices and roots that help revitalize your system and settle your stomach. Combined with coke this is a light and delicious cocktail to start your day with.

Of course, there are dozens of hair-of-the-dog hangover cures that many people swear by that we didn’t include in this list. These are just a few of our favorites!
